skin a mattress by moonlight, my dear?

Posted by: Robert

Well, there were also a few outdoor flood lights and the occasional camera flash.

We got this mattress from our friends Catie Olson and EC Brown.  They had it stored away in one of their closets to be used by guests whenever they stayed over.  We thought it would be great to have another “clean” mattress, so we gladly accepted it.  The mattress was delivered a few days ago, but unfortunately we never brought it inside and naturally it rained.  It is a little discolored now, but probably also a little more authentic.

So begins a quick evening skinning before Chicago decides to rain again.

This mattress is tufted rather than quilted like our previous finds.

As I start to cut my side of the mattress I hear, “What the. . .?!”  I step over to see what the problem was as Lucy pulls back the cover to reveal some sort of natural fiber covering the springs.  I now know this material is coir fiber from the coconut shells.

We were not expecting this.

This was definitely not a hypoallergenic mattress.  Every time we moved it or set it down there was a puff of dust.  I doubt it was coconut powder, but you never know.
Yep. Coconuts. You sleep on coconuts.

Thanks to our Friend Matt Hanner in Indiana for supplying this mattress

Matt's cat hates everything

We decided to skin the mattress in the back yard. Nice, right?

The cutting begins...

We went to drop off our mattress skeleton at Matt's storage space. When we got there we noticed that there was a partially skinned mattress just lying there.

wandering body parts

So I’m trying to figure out the proportions and such of this rabbit. It was a bit easier on our small cardboardmaquette. I can’t seem to get everything right. I’m going to keep working on it, and hopefully by the end of the day have everything figured out and have separate templates made for each part.

This Thursday will be a dedicated mattress bunny day. We’re going to Indiana to pick up a mattress from a friend who coincidentally is getting a new mattress- thanks Matt! It’ll be one mattress that we won’t need to wash because it smells like shit.

“it puts the lotion on its skin, or it gets the hose again.”

First, I must appologize to our millions of adoring fans for such a late post.  We had done some work on the project last week, but busy schedules and a bit of procrastination delayed finishing this post until now.

So last Tuesday was our big mattress bunny day.  We had plans of getting up really early and doing a lot of planning and cleaning of our found mattresses.  We had the whole day to dedicate to our project – sun up to sun down… Best laid plans, right?  Well It wasn’t until about 11:30am that we finally woke up.  We knew that there wouldn’t be another good day to work on this for a while so we had to make the most of it.  So, with half of the day gone, we went to work.

The best place to wash our mattresses was decided to be in the ally in front of the garage door.  all supplies were gathered and the garden hose was pulled over the fence.  We laid out some heavy plastic sheets on the asphalt to keep the mattresses a little bit cleaner and to prevent any unnecessary damage.  We whipped up a little cleaning cocktail and used a long handled brush that I picked up just for this job.

A few glugs of simple green and a dash of laundry detergent to make it sudsy.

Our super secret mattress cleaning formula seemed to work pretty well.  All the water that was being rinsed away had that mirky blueish-brown tint that you would expect, but aren’t really prepared for.  Hey, don’t forget, we said used mattresses not filthy mattresses.

Mmmmm... i love the smell of used mattresses in the morning.

Mmmmm... I love the smell of used mattresses in the morning.

Every so often a person or a car would pass by and we had to stop spaying.  The last thing we needed was to explain to an angry passerby that they are covered in used mattress slop because we are trying to make some art.

Yeah, we're washing mattress covers in our ally! What? You don't?

After their final rinse, we rolled up our mattresses to wring out as much excess water as possible.  It was reassuring seeing the colors coming out weren’t quite as strong as when we began.  The damp covers were then taken into the back yard where I had installed two clotheslines.  We hoped that they would dry soon before another crazy storm came by and soaked them again.

So up until this point we were using Lucy’s digital camera to document this part of the process.  Everything was going smoothly until I tried taking some pictures of the mattresses hanging from the clothesline.  the camera seemed to be having trouble focusing.  I snapped a few blurry pictures, shrugged (knowing that i can just finish the shots with my camera), and figured i just needed to give the camera a rest.  However, when I hit the power button I heard a very depressing little crunch and grinding sound.  Some part of the lens mechanism  was malfunctioning and not allowing it to focus or retract.  I took it in side to give it some TLC and eventually got it to work by “assisting” the lens into its closed/off position.  It works fine now.  I guess it just needed some encouragement.

Lucy is usually the one who takes blurry pictures, but this one I will take credit for along with her camera, of course.

The whole experience was quite a work-out.  Our hands and arms were soar after wrestling with soaked mattress covers.  In the end we worked up quite a sweat in Chicago’s humid afternoon sun trying to clean these covers, but it will make working with them later much more pleasant.  Lucy will be doing some full scale drawings soon which will turn into our templates.  It won’t be long until we’ll see just how big this bunny is going to be, so fasten your seatbelts everyone!

Things don’t always work out

Posted by Lucia

So, we were planning on working on cleaning and picking up more mattress yesterday night, but it didn’t work out. I was at ThreeWalls de-installing two shows and moving 2a into 2d, and by the time we were finished, we went out and treated ourselves to The Dark Night. We didn’t get home till about 2am.

This morning before Andy had to go to work, we had planned on working on the project. But it was raining, and we were so exhausted from the day before (Andy worked 7am-4pm and then came to help me at threewalls) that we slept until about noon.

So now, everything is super wet. I need to go to threewalls to finish moving, and Andy is at work till 10pm. Tomorrow we have the day reserved to work on the mattress bunny. It’s supposed to rain the rest of today, and tomorrow. I have no idea when or what or how we’re going to work on this. The next two weeks we have almost no time together to work on this- our work schedules are really opposite, and we have too much going on on the side.

This is starting to get a little stressful.

Second time around

So we had to do this skinning really quick since Andy had to go to work.
A really nice blue mattress. The edge is wet from the rain, the plastic didn't cover all of it.

This blue mattress was a little odd. It’s a pillow top mattress, but it’s pillow top on both sides.
As we were taking off the top of the mattress, we couldn't figure out was was going on with the foam underneath. Upon closer inspection, and some deep cutting, we found another mattress pad.

Everything all sprawled out.

In the meantime….

this is the other mattress we found. I couldn't skin it, it smelled SO BAD! It was also really stained, and the back of it had no quilting on it. It was just flat.

The other mattresses we’ve found have been a little shinny, and this one wasn’t. Andy tried to talk to into keeping it, but hey- we got two mattress out of the blue one.. so out this one went.

So this is weird:

Do you think the mattress industry is taking old mattress, and re-covering them? This is super odd...
This a label on the inside mattress pad we found….

Do you think the mattress industry is taking old mattress, and re-covering them? This is super odd…I can’t think of any reason why the label would be on the inside of the mattress. I really can’t figure out why there was another mattress pad inside the foam. If anyone has any insights, let me know.

So tomorrow we’re going to try to wash the pads.  Possibly get them wet out in the alleyway and scrub them to death with simple green.  We need to rig up a clothesline to hang them from to dry from too.  I need to start working on the templates so we can start cutting them in cute bunny shapes.  Unfortunately, there’s no kraft paper in the house, and I haven’t been able to go out and buy a roll.  Ah, the days of being an art student and having all the brown paper I wanted at my fingertips.. .

It’s raining, it’s pouring…

Posted by Lucia:

Andy’s at work, and I’m home today. Riding back from ACE hardware, it started to sprinkle. The sky was completely dark, and I was hoping to get back in time, but it didn’t happen. Thunderstorms were forecasted for the day, and I had been so wrapped up in the fruit fly situation and the broken fridge I had forgotten to cover the mattress. Cutting into a wet, found mattress can’t be that pleasurable.

Upon grabbing some plastic sheeting, and rushing out to the kitchen door, I encountered a squirrel on the deck.

That’s not garbage, it’s recycle-ables. What could he be looking for? Perhaps the last few drops of Fat Squirrel

rain, rain, go away...

rain, rain, go away...

After struggling with the plastic, a ledge on the ground, wobbly ikea chair, and a pumpkin vine,  I was able to cover the mattress.  Hopefully, they won’t get totally soaked. I don’t know when we’ll have an opportunity to cut into them now.

what could this possibly smell like?

I really didn’t want to go out and get these, but Andy convinced me. We have a fruit fly problem that I needed to conquer. Anyway, these are now sitting in our backyard, waiting to be cut up in cute bunny pieces.

Skinning the first mattress

Posted by Lucia:

So we’ll probably end up doing most of the work in our back yard- keeping everything outside for sanitary reasons. Though, I think that mini dutch could handle a mattress bunny.

We started out by cutting around the exterior of the mattress. The goal is to save the edge of the mattress with piping to use for "cleanly" finishing the rabbit's side

So once the mattress pad and foam pad came off, we encountered a felt lining. It was so odd to see the springs beneath.
